The bunker builder
Size a store room, put up shelving, stock it, and read how long the household lasts, drawn in three dimensions as you go with a person at the door for scale. Two of the figures are official and cited; the rest are starting guesses you are asked to change.
- 1Size the room and the shelving
- 2Say what is on the shelves
- 3Read how long it lasts, then share the link

What this is not
Not emergency guidance, and not a plan. GOV.UK Be Ready suggests keeping enough of what you use for about three days, and lists water (3 litres a person a day), food that needs no cooking, a torch, a radio, a first aid kit and warm layers; those are the figures on this page that are cited. The rest, from the calories in a tin to the sheets on a roll, are plain guesses to get you going, said as such, and every one of them is yours to change. The room is a toy: the shelving is 90 by 40 by 180 centimetres because that is a common flat-pack size, the tins are drawn as 400 g tins, the gas is camping gas for a stove used outdoors, and whatever does not fit on the shelves or the floor is left on the pavement and not counted. Stockwise lists no fuel, and food only as a few hand-picked long-life buckets on Food stores; the links go to the kit it does list, and to the checklists for the rest. Information, not advice, and a bit of fun.
