Five situations, every line sourced

Be ready for

Five things that happen to UK households, each as a short checklist. Every line links to the official source it comes from; follow that source and the emergency services first. Information, not advice.

  3. Keep warm with blankets and layers. Close curtains and the doors of unused rooms. GOV.UK Be Ready: power cuts
  4. Keep fridge and freezer doors closed: they stay cold for several hours. GOV.UK Be Ready: power cuts
  5. Find news on a battery or wind-up radio, then check in on neighbours. GOV.UK Be Ready: power cuts

Do not use a barbecue or camping stove indoors or inside a tent. Portable generators can produce carbon monoxide too: it is colourless, does not smell and can make you seriously ill. NHS: carbon monoxide poisoning
